Modern Handmade Child is a seasonal online publication celebrating handmade living in a new way. Our mission is to provide a fun and valuable resource helping families to embrace the handmade way of life, by intertwining the skills and values of days gone by with the trends and technologies of today. Our editors and contributors come together from around the world, including Europe, Australia, Canada, and many parts of the United States. Modern Handmade Child is published quarterly and available for free at www.mhcmag.com.
In early Spring of 2009, after seeing a digital publication produced by a friend of hers in the UK, Gretchen Jakub Fabre’s wheels started turning. Having held the position of editor for a small publication in the UK, Gretchen decided to approach her friend Shannon Hanley with the idea of creating an online magazine. Founder and team leader for the EtsyKids Team, Shannon had many connections to creative individuals all over the world. Together they began brainstorming for the magazine and tapping into the wealth of ideas and knowledge of the multi-talented EtsyKids Team members, and Modern Handmade Child magazine was born.
With many details still to be worked out, Gretchen and Shannon were eager to get started on the magazine and planned for the first issue to come out in August 2009, crossing their fingers all the while that the rest would fall into place. Today the team consists of editors and contributors from many different backgrounds and locations across the globe all coming together to write about topics ranging from kids’ fashion to home décor, crafty tutorials to children’s activities. Despite their diverse histories, they all have one thing in common: a passion for sharing their love of handmade with the world. It is this passion that is the driving force behind Modern Handmade Child.
